I rarely choose English voiceovers in games set where it’s not the native language, but there’s a level of stereotypical stoicism in the Russian voice artists that isn’t as easy to connect with as their British and American counterparts. The Farm 51įrom gang leaders and deaf war heroes to eccentric pyromaniacs and Igor himself, the story is carried especially well by its English-speaking talent. Because its surprises are so unique and enthralling, you’ll find yourself exploring each question mark on your HUD, not least because the characters you meet are so perfectly amplified by solid voice acting. Visions of people disappear and make you question your sanity monsters move with a P.T.-style jerkiness other, weirder horrific surprises await in every corner of your chosen map (most memorably, a crying soldier).

As a self-proclaimed wimp, I struggle with jumpscares and Outlast-style dread, and while Chernobylite has its fair share of these moments, its more traditional FPS elements, plus a certain campiness surrounding time-honored horror tropes (specifically the dolls), help diffuse the tension.
Galvanized by the art of creeping around, Chernobylite’s true strength is its accessible approach to atmospheric horror. Luckily, this lack of firearm finesse, combined with Chernobylite’s ammo resource management, makes you see guns as a last resort–and only enhances the focus on stealth, which is a major boon to the overall experience. In situations like this, I’m willing to grant Chernobylite the Konami Silent Hill defense, where your protagonist has poor weapons training: you’re a scientist, not a throw-a-fist. Weapons pack a punch, especially with various upgrades to match your preferred loadout, but looking down the barrel with your left trigger does nothing to slow your aim–it feels like you’re just waving your arm about madly, simply hoping to hit something. It’s just as well the combat can be a bit… rubbish.
Meanwhile, you can’t get away with a stealth takedown in close quarters to another with their back turned much more brutal and realistic than, say, Deathloop. Enemy soldiers with a clear line of sight can see you from a believably long distance, though warning reticles remain fair. The game is heavily geared towards stealth, and to Chernobylite’s credit, it does an impressive job of it–especially because it’s much more realistic than its contemporaries. Of course, these need to be hidden well, lest they be destroyed by soldiers–a wonderful touch. You can build traps, stations, and tools while you’re out there, creating outposts to serve your needs in each given area, but also developing technology to improve your environment and reverse its chernobylite-led corruption. Putting progression off in favor of securing food or upgrades may often seem like the best plan, but leaving a region to fester only makes it more difficult to face later in the game.
